Welcome to Chini-ka-Rauza

Chini-ka-ruaza: Less than 1 km to the north of Itmad-ud-Daul is the Chini-ka-rauza, built in 1635 and presumably the mausoleum of Afzal Khan, the Persian poet and Prime Minister Shah Jahan. It is abandoned and destroyed, its soft brown stone fell victim to all possible elements, and it crumbles into the waters of the river on whose banks it is located. Crowned with a bulbous dome in Afghan style, this tomb of inexpressive earthy color is not at all like the fine work of Nur Jahan, but it is remarkable for being the only Persian structure in Agra. Parts of the walls are still covered with colored enamel tiles (chini), which once ennobled the entire exterior and gave the tomb its name, and on the high domed ceiling, it is still possible to distinguish the remains of paintings and Islamic calligraphy.
